I don’t think suicidal people get enough credit for not acting on their suicidal thoughts.

This post is for all of you who have survived the urge to end your life, either coming out the other side or still fighting to stay alive. 

I noticed how when someone has a physical illness such as cancer, and they come out the other side or even remission, they are able to celebrate surviving. I think all of the survivors of being suicidal should too.

Congratulations, and keep on fighting.

I really don’t care for blanket statements along these lines. If the implication is that suicidal people who do end their own lives are somehow “weaker”or less capable of “fighting” than suicidal people who haven’t taken their own lives, or if there is even a remote chance that it is being suggested that these people have “given in”, then this makes me extremely uncomfortable, to put it as politely as I can. Also the notion that “surviving” or “existing” is preferable by default for every single person alive reeks of erasing and ignoring people’s individual experiences whether that is the intention or not. I don’t want to be “congratulated” for not killing myself all the times I have wanted to as if to say “yes! you made the right decision! good job!” because the implication behind that sentiment is so clearly that taking one’s own life is always wrong and bad, regardless of one’s circumstances. I think this post meant well. But if I want solidarity from other people who suffer from severe depression/suicidal ideation, I don’t want it to read anything like this post. Maybe it’s just me, but I can’t get behind this at all.
