Let me preface this by saying I am only speaking about the US. I find it weird when Christian people put things in their Facebook like ‘unapologetically Christian’ cos like, outside of a few corners of the internet, when do you ever have to apologise for being Christian or justify it? You lot are the undisputed majority in the US and your religion permeates almost every aspect of American life and yet so many Christians have this really weird victim complex, which we also see in the ‘war on Christmas’ bollocks every year and various other situations. And bear in mind, I live in Texas. Being unapologetically Christian in Texas is about as bold as doing so at the Vatican. I wonder how many are aware that there are places where Christians actually are oppressed? Or maybe I’m reading wayyyyyy too much into this and should just hush.

"The Gay Rights Movement"

Or how a riot started by queers, drag queens, transgender people and sex workers became ruthlessly hijacked and monopolized by normatively attractive, affluent, masculine gay men who value assimilation and heteronormativity over universal healthcare - and who viciously spurn those magnificent queens who came before them - and gave it a universally accepted brand name (the GAY rights movement) that highlights its own exclusionary nature.

"FIX YOUR FACE. WHY AREN'T YOU SMILING? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?"

Well, I was completely fine until you, for some strange reason, felt compelled to tell me that I didn’t look it. This is what my face generally looks like so I don’t see why I should react pleasantly when you tell me that it’s “wrong.” And why do all these people seem so obsessed with making sure everyone is constantly smiling? What kind of hell on earth would we be living in if smiling was the only acceptable facial expression? If I smiled anywhere near as often as you tell me I should, I’m positive that my face would ache. God help you if I ever did actually decide to answer your question “WHAT’S WRONG???” (Well, where do I start…) Now I want to spit in your face when before I only wanted to occasionally say rude things about you to myself (and my blog.)

"CIGARETTES ARE BAD FOR YOU."

Oh thanks, I had NO idea. You’re the first person on earth to let me in on that little known secret. LIFE is bad for me, fuck you, you’re boring, go away.

JUST LET ME SMOKE. IT IS MY ONLY JOY IN LIFE.

I'm only just now realizing how thoroughly creeped out I am by the fact that my parents taught me to look forward to a giant white man who loves children breaking into our house while we sleep once a year.

just a few questions: why do we have galbladders? they seem pointless and so above evolution. also why do they call it reality when we know it's not real? also isn't it weird how many people drink diet coke but are clearly NOT on diets. i know you are not an expert but i want your facts please. man... you'd be so much fun to have a beer with.
Nov 29, 20116 notes
fyi I'm asking these questions in good humor and with genuine curiosity, not coming from one standpoint or the other necessarily, i just think you'd be rad to talk to over a bottle of whiskey or something and these are some things i'd probably ask since you seem to know your shit.

Bring me vodka and I’ll read Richard Dawkins to you until the sun comes up.

Nov 29, 20111 note
sorry, I was definitely not trying to be eugenics-y at all, I meant like homosexuality (not necessarily trans/queer identified people in general, specifically the primal desire to be sexually active with someone of the same gender) is not in stride with evolution since it does not lend itself to breeding. so what scientific reason could back up a sex drive removed from the possibility of procreation? do you believe in the possibility of a soul that wants what it wants, body deemed irrelevant?

Then what do you say to heterosexual couples who have sex while taking prophylactic measures to ensure that pregnancy does not occur? Straight people want to and frequently have non-reproductive sex. Take a look at the Homosexual Behavior in Animals and the Animal Sexual Behavior Wikipedia articles. And it certainly wouldn’t hurt to read a little Richard Dawkins just to get a better understanding of the basics of evolution. You can ask why homosexuality evolved but you can’t ask “isn’t it not in stride with evolution” because it was evolution that gave us this behavior in the first place. And no, I don’t believe in the concept of the soul. And again, I will defer to any experts who wish to correct anything that I’ve gotten wrong or who are willing to explain this more succinctly and completely than I can.

Nov 29, 20114 notes
what is the scientific reason for homosexuality? do you believe it is genetic? if it is a choice, what scientific explanation for this choice could there be? doesn't it go against the plan of evolution? please don't take these Qs the wrong way I totally love you I just want to know what your answers to these questions would be if someone asked you at a party

Well I’m queer, not homosexual, and I’m definitely not an evolutionary biologist so my response to any scientific inquiries would be to “go ask a scientist.” Not because I don’t feel like answering them, but because I’m not an expert. Although I will say that by trying to apply the theory of evolution by natural selection to human social constructs you are treading in dangerous, possibly eugenics-y waters. My second answer would take the form of another question: why does it matter if being queer or gay or trans is a choice or not? And since we’re at a party, I’d tell you to shutup and pass the MDMA cause I need to snort a fat line.

“The action of a man who volunteers to die for his fellow creatures is universally regarded as noble. The extra claim not to have “really” died makes the whole sacrifice tricky and meretricious. Thus, those who say “Christ died for my sins,” when he did not really “die” at all, are making a statement that is false in its own terms.” —Christopher Hitchens, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything (via cocknbull)

Another friendly reminder.

gadgetry:

Not distinguishing between racism/sexism/homophobia/transphobia etc and its “reverse” against the majority implies that there is an equivalency between the two. There is no equivalency when you have a power structure in place that systemically oppresses some groups and privileges others. All it takes is a cursory glance at the political/legal system in this country, those who tend to comprise our representation, and the laws that exist to get the most basic idea of how that power structure operates. And that’s just scratching the surface.

For a woman to be suspicious of the men she encounters is not sexism when the law so often fails to punish rapists, or when there are legitimate threats to her bodily autonomy and abortion rights. A transwoman that avoids all possible contact with straight men is not sexist, because she acknowledges the likelihood of encountering physical danger if she is honest about her identity. A black man who assumes that white people mean trouble is not racist when you consider the astoundingly poor track record this country has with regard to civil rights.

When you ignore that there is a BIG difference between the aforementioned examples and the kind of institutionalized racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc that pervade daily life, you are helping perpetuate the former. You are trivializing very real suffering. I know you may not mean it, but that doesn’t excuse it. So please don’t do that.

  • HIV+ individuals are not “loaded guns” that you need to “protect” yourself from. They’re human beings, you dehumanizing prick.
  • Sex work must be recognized for the legitimate profession that it is and it must be recognized that women, transwomen and others have a right utilize their body however they see fit regardless of your unsolicited opinion and none of them should have to expect violence as a “natural consequence” of their line of work nor should they have to fear for their lives while trying to pay the rent.
  •  The word “tranny” still isn’t funny.

#SOME THOUGHTS
Nov 22, 20111,454 notes
“The most well-funded organizations in the gay and lesbian movement do not provide direct legal services to low-income people, but instead focus their resources on high-profile impact litigation cases and policy efforts. Most of these efforts have traditionally focused on concerns central to the lives of nonpoor lesbian and gay people and have ignored the most pressing issues in the lives of poor people, people of color, and transgender people. The “gay agenda” has been about passing our apartments to each other when we die, not about increasing affordable housing or opposing illegal eviction. It has been about getting our partnerships recognized so our partners can share our private health benefits, not about defending Medicaid rights or demanding universal health care. It has been about getting our young sons into Boy Scouts, not about advocating for the countless/uncounted queer and trans youth struggling against a growing industry of youth incarceration. It has been about working to put more punishment power in the hands of an overtly racist criminal system with passage of hate crimes laws, not about opposing the mass incarceration of a generation of men of color, or fighting the abuse of queer and trans people in adult and juvenile justice settings.” —
